No one wants to spend Christmas with a bright red nose, puffy eyes, dry skin and massive greasy acne breakouts. We don’t want to have to pile on the makeup to cover huge red spots before festive nights out and none of us want to shine brighter than the angel on the top of our tree, with oily skin and yellow-headed zits.
Ideally, we’d all love to spend the holidays looking out best. We want to be ready to party at a moments notice. We want to look great as we roll out of bed on Christmas morning. We want to be comfortable and confident in our own skin.
But, unfortunately, most of us find it harder than ever to look out best at Christmas time. Many of us are wearing more makeup than usual as we enjoy parties and events. We’re sleeping less, eating more unhealthy foods, drinking more alcohol and less water. We’re generally not looking after ourselves and over indulging, and our skin is often the first place that it shows. Here are some of the things that you can do to protect your skin.
Take Care of Your Health
If you don’t want that dry, red nose, you need to take care of yourself. Look after your health by resting when you need to, washing your hands and practicing good personal hygiene, and taking a multivitamin to boost your immune system.
Get More Sleep
Plenty of sleep will also boost your immune system, helping to protect you from winter bugs and illnesses. Sleep will also reduce the appearance of black bags and puffy eyes, and give your skin a chance to rest and recover. Try to get eight hours a night, and if you sleep less one day, try to catch up as soon as possible.
Have Makeup-Free Days
If you are staying home one day, cleanse your face, apply some gentle moisturiser and then leave it be. Give it a break.
Stick to One Brand
Makeup isn’t necessarily harmful to your skin. But, the more chemicals and ingredients that you introduce, the more chance you’ve got of clogged pores and damage. So, try to stick to one brand, and natural makeup products to keep your skin looking fresh and healthy.
Wash Your Brushes
Makeup brushes, sponges and other applicators are home to bacteria and germs. They spread bacteria and grease over your face, increasing the risk of spots and even infection. Keep your brushes clean, and your skin will be much healthier.
Prepare Your Skin
A good foundation primer doesn’t just keep your makeup on; it also protects your pores and reduces any clogging.
Stick to a Healthy Skincare Routine
Get a routine that works for you, and stick to it. Try exfoliating once a week, cleansing every morning and night, moisturising and giving yourself a gentle face massage to boost circulation. Keep it simple and stick to it.
Drink More Water
Water hydrates your skin, reduces swelling and inflammation, and keeps it young and healthy. Try to sip water throughout the day and reduce caffeine and alcohol for a healthy skin tone.
