As we head into spring, longer and brighter days are duly welcomed with the arrival of lambs and the first blooms. Mothering Sunday, which falls on the 30th of March in the UK this year, is a reason to celebrate in spring.
It’s a time to show your mum how much you appreciate them, but choosing how to best mark the occasion can be a little overwhelming. Gifting Mother’s Day flowers is traditional and timeless, and picking the right bunch doesn’t have to be difficult.
Personality and Preference
Energetic and bold or refined elegance – choosing florals to match a personality is more important than you might have first imagined.
Bright gerberas and standout sunflowers suit extroverts. Softly coloured roses and lilies, on the other hand, favour the more introverted. Take the time to consider your mum’s personality and consider flowers that match.
Although personality is a key factor, so is personal preference. Consider flowers your mum has purchased previously and note any favourites or ones that may cause allergies.
Embracing 2025 Floral Trends
Now that you have an idea of the colour scheme, it’s time to consider what the arrangement will look like. If you’re unsure where to begin, taking a look at the latest floral trends is a good place to start.
Taking the spotlight are wildflower blooms; their foraged aesthetic brings a bohemian touch, creating a relaxing and natural feel. Think cosmos, daisies and cornflowers.
Textured bouquets are also set to be popular, offering visual interest with depth and colour experimentation – soft hydrangeas paired with striking foliage or succulents, for example.
Considering Sustainability
Somewhat surprisingly, around 90% of flowers sold in UK supermarkets, florists and wholesalers are imported from abroad. These mostly come from the Netherlands, but some travel from as far as Ecuador and Kenya. The beautiful bunch of flowers you had your eye on may, therefore, actually come with a large carbon footprint.
To lower the carbon impact of your blooms, opt for in-season varieties from British flower farms instead of tropical displays. Tulips and daffodils are a popular choice.
Ensuring Timely Delivery
Choosing the flowers you wish to give your mum is only half the battle – getting them to her is the other. If you’ll be visiting, hand delivering them is the best option. However, if you won’t be able to pop by, look for retailers that offer next-day or chosen-day delivery so you know your mum will be there to receive them.
If you don’t want to run the risk of your chosen blooms sitting on the doorstep, look out for letterbox flowers that can be posted instead.
