Pockets are useful only when their position, shape and construction suit the item placed inside. A garment can have generous-looking pockets that distort when used, or small discreet ones that work for a key but not a phone. During a permitted fitting, test the actual light load you intend to carry. Do not assume every pocket can replace the bag used for the rest of the day.

Inspect the opening and pocket bag

Check how easily your hand reaches inside without twisting the garment. Look at the internal depth and lining where accessible. A short pocket can expose part of an item, while a wide opening may be easy to use but offer less containment. Read any intended use information and keep valuables suitably secure. Appearance alone does not establish what the construction is designed to hold.

Try the garment empty first

Walk and sit with pockets empty, checking whether openings already pull. If a trouser pocket gapes before anything is added, compare fit and construction rather than treating it only as a storage problem. A jacket pocket can change the front line because of body fit as well. Keep those questions separate before deciding to sew a pocket closed or buy another organiser.

Add one realistic item

Where permitted, place a clean small intended item inside and inspect front and side. Sit, stand and walk. A phone can pull a skirt sideways or make a jacket front sag even when it fits physically. Try another carrying point if the result is awkward. The useful test is ordinary movement with the real item, not how much can be packed into the pocket for a capacity demonstration.

Compare convenience with silhouette

An open patch pocket is visible and can be easy to access. An internal pocket may be discreet but supported mainly by lining. A slanted trouser pocket behaves differently from a straight opening. None is universally best. Decide whether quick access, secure containment or a quieter line matters most for the garment's role. A compact bag can remain the better place for heavier essentials.

If the pocket catches or tears

Stop loading it and inspect the fault. A small repair may be appropriate, while weakened surrounding fabric can need more careful assessment. Ask a competent repairer where necessary. Do not treat a damaged lining pocket as an invitation to push items between lining and outer fabric. Repeated strain may also indicate that the chosen load is unsuitable even after a repair.

Should new stitched pockets always be opened?

Check the maker's information before cutting any stitching. Some closures are temporary, while other details may be decorative or constructed differently. Ask the retailer if uncertain. Empty pockets before laundering or hanging, inspect corners for wear and follow pressing guidance. Useful pockets should make the day simpler without changing a comfortable garment into a distorted carrying system.
